What is STEAM?
Stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
A philosophy of education that “embraces teaching skills and subjects in a way that resembles real life.” (Shelley, STEAM Powered Family)
Project and inquiry-based lessons are taught with a focus on interdisciplinary learning.
This shows how subjects work together in real life (e.g. architect uses science, math, engineering and technology to do their job).
Arts is now included to emphasize the importance of creative thinking and applied arts. “Ingenious ways of problem solving, integrating principles or presenting information” (Shelley).
Why STEAM and Career Development?
Jobs are interdisciplinary in the real world and STEAM teaches students how subjects integrate and work together.
It is important for individuals to know how to think critically and evaluate information then how to apply knowledge, research and skills to problem solve. These are relevant skills needed for success in the workplace to maintain a job.
STEAM embraces the 4Cs of 21st Century education (i.e. creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication) which are critical to an individual's success in work and life.
