Career development is the lifelong process of managing learning, work, leisure, and transitions in order to move toward a personally determined and evolving preferred future ("Glossary of Career Development," CERIC, ceric.ca). It's not just about job placement—it's about helping students understand themselves and the world of work, so they can make informed, meaningful career-life choices throughout their lives.
Self-awareness: Think about interests, values, abilities, personality, and lived experiences
Exploring options: Explore educational paths, work environments, labor market trends, career roles
Planning: Decision-making, goal setting, prioritizing tasks, adapting to change
Taking action: Skill development, work experience, volunteering, networking, mentorship, continuous learning, work documents, job search, application process
Career development can (and should) start early. From kindergarten through high school, students benefit from opportunities to explore who they are and how their strengths and interests can shape their future. Exploring options helps foster curiosity, confidence, and possibility.
