Children's Book Mission

Create a Childrens' Book Based on Primary Source information found in the Library of Congress' Federal Writers Project database.

Your Task:

  1. Select one of the stories from the Federal Writers Project collection of Depression Victim Stories.
  2. Read the story and imagine seeing the Great Depression through their eyes.
  3. Create a Children's book that will capture the basic of the Depression as told by one of the people in the depression story you have read.
    1. You may be creative with this story, but the major details need to be included.
    2. Follow the guidelines below
    3. Also include the original text at the end of the children's book.

The Children’s Book must contain the following elements.

1. A Title Page with an appropriate Title and the authors listed

2. At least 10 pages (not including the title page)

3. The book must be illustrated (either digitally or hand drawn)

a. the book may contain other people’s works, but that work must be cited.

b. creative commons may be used without citation

c. Blank pages may be used for effect or artistic necessity.

4. The book must contain at least 2 visual primary sources

a. With citations

b. the primary source can be the actual source or an artistically rendered imitation.

5. The book must contain at least 1 actual quote

a. With citations (must be valid sources, not a list quotes from a google search)

6. Explanations for the parents.

a. feel free to get creative with this. For example, a final, popup notes within the text, or some other technique. If you use an eBook creator you may even have the ability to record yourself giving an explanation.

b. the explanations need to be historically accurate.
