Over the semester we are going to look at sustainability and what it means, the impact it has and how we can apply it to our everyday lives.
We will complete several tasks using the knowledge we have gained as well as using recycled, and/or up-cycled materials
In the second term you will choose a project to undertake that promotes the concept of sustainability
Some of our projects include:
creating your own work bag from recycled materials (old t-shirts, old fabrics etc)
making our own paper and turning these into cards
macrame plant holders
designing and painting our own reusable gift wrap
Along with this there is going to be research, documenting your project and completing the design process from start to finish for your chosen outcome. You might choose to buddy up with someone and use different parts of each others jeans or work together and create 2 of the same project. Either way, it needs to start with a STAKEHOLDER and a CONCEPT
Research onto your slides and creating a poster about the FASHION INDUSTRY and SUSTAINABILITY
Your poster might be digital and printed off or you might choose to do this as paper and pens.
Ako ki te Waihanga - Learn to Create
+You need to create your own digital learning object about sustainability
-What is it?
-What are some of the issues we face? (at least 3)
-What is a carbon footprint?
-What can we do to be more sustainable in our lives? (reduce our carbon footprint)
You need to publish this on your blog with the label 'TEXTILES SUSTAINABILITY'
Tohatoha - Share
We are going to spend some time sharing our blogs with the class and commenting on each others posts.

Plan and Make SOMETHING using a TSHIRT or scrap material to hold your classwork over the semester. It is all up to you to do the RESEARCH and create your own PATTERN and KEY STAGES
Think about the:
+What
+How
+Size needed
+Materials
+Technique

Document your process - this will be done through google slides. You need to think about your key stages and why you have chosen to do it this way. I will photograph your final products for your blogs
+ Check out how paper is made? What can you find out to add to your blog post
+ Complete a PMI = Positive, Minus (Negative), Interesting chart to include
+ Create a step by step process
Check out the clips below
Once you feel confident, give it a go to make your own paper
Once your paper is dry you will use it to create a set of recycled cards (see task below).
Picture document the process as you make it (photos or drawings of the steps taken)
Document your process of creation on your blog from inspiration to execution. Make sure to include pictures!
We need to make sure we soak this for a few days so that it blends into a pulp nicely. It needs to be recycled paper that would normally be thrown out. Where could we find this?
Task 2: Card research
+ a visual mood board of card types that inspire you (google drawing)
+ you will be creating 4 cards for a stakeholder/s and need to consider colour, type of card, whether you are going to add things etc.
+ PMI table about making paper (positive, minus, interesting)
+ Would you do it again? Why or why not?
+ What can you find out about the paper industry - waste, resources, fuels used HOW SUSTAINABLE IS IT?
Are there different ways to knot it? You do not have to use this particular video tutorial. You can do your own research and extend yourself if you choose.
How much wrapping paper lands in landfills?
Approximately 2.1 million kgs of wrapping paper is produced in the U.S. each year, and that about 1 million kgs ends up in landfills.
Wrapping paper makes up 10% of the total U.S.paper market and most of it cannot be recycled as it is laminated
