PLAY BASED LEARNING
Our classroom is a 'play based' learning environment. Play is the work of children. Play is how children learn and explore their environments.
What will a typical day look like? Over time, as the children get used to the classroom environment, we will meet on the carpet to say our good mornings, sing songs, and listen to stories. The rest of the day will be filled with opportunities to do many hands-on activities like building with blocks, cooking, dramatic play, legos, art, paint, read books, draw, and write in a love filled environment supporting their social and emotional needs. I encourage you to sign up to volunteer in the classroom to play and learn with the children.
The kids will get messy! Please do not send them in fancy clothes and shoes. I want them to feel free to run, sit, lay, and play!
Why a 'play based' learning environment?
The National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) states:
Children learn through their play. Children learn and develop:
cognitive skills – like math and problem solving in a pretend grocery store
physical abilities – like balancing blocks and running on the playground
new vocabulary – like the words they need to play with toy dinosaurs
social skills – like playing together in a pretend car wash
literacy skills – like creating a menu for a pretend restaurant
Play is healthy.
Play helps children grow strong and healthy. It also counteracts obesity issues facing many children today.
Play reduces stress.
Play helps your children grow emotionally. It is joyful and provides an outlet for anxiety and stress.
Play and learning go hand-in-hand.
They are not separate activities. They are intertwined. Think about them as a science lecture with a lab. Play is the child’s lab.
Play is a child’s context for learning.
Children practice and reinforce their learning in multiple areas during play. It gives them a place and a time for learning that cannot be achieved through completing a worksheet. For example, in playing restaurant, children write and draw menus, set prices, take orders, and make out checks. Play provides rich learning opportunities and leads to children’s success and self-esteem.
You can expect to see messy hands, smiling faces and a love for being at school. You can expect to hear talking, laughing, and maybe even some crying... lol
What can you expect to learn? You will see me playing with children in all of the areas of the classroom: math, reading, writing, art, puzzles, science blocks, cooking, and dance; wherever THEY determine I am needed. I meet children where they are developmentally and encourage them to keep growing. The children will learn schedules and procedures, how to express their feelings and ask for what they want. They will learn to take turns and to share. The will even learn how to sit still long enough to hear a great story or take time to do some calming breathing. Don't worry, they will be learning their letters, numbers, writing, and maybe begin reading along the way.
What can I expect to learn? I look forward to you and your child sharing your culture, languages, and ideas with me. You are a teacher in the classroom and I am excited to learn from you!
