Grade One

Grade one begins every year with a self portrait. Each student receives a mirror so they can look at themselves and see what to draw. We also look at a couple of portraits and self portraits and discuss what the artist was trying to portray. In Norman Rockwells self portrait students try to determine what kinds of things we can find out about him given the clues in the painting. For instance was he neat or messy? Who were his favorite artists? Could he have been a patriotic person? Some of these things are added into the painting and let us know a bit more about he man himself. Students are also asked to add thing into their self portraits that tell the viewer about who they are.
