A Wish in the Dark is a middle grade retelling of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables which is set in a Thai-inspired fantasy world. With her suspenseful storytelling, Soontornvat introduces her readers to her heroes: a fugitive on a quest for his freedom, and the daughter of a prison warden, who is forced to change her perspective of the law. This captivating story illustrates how a person, regardless of their circumstances, can use compassion and inner strength to stand up for what is morally right and just.

For Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we held a workshop series to give students opportunities to learn about different cultural experiences. Inspired by the setting of A Wish in the Dark, we set out to learn about the varied heritage of members of our school community. Students, parents, and teachers offered their expertise and led workshops during the month of May.
