2016 HMS All-School Read:
A Long Walk To Water
Summer 2016: All students as incoming sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, their teachers, and all support staff participated in the reading of the novel, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park. This inspirational novel touched the lives of all readers, and prompted many exciting events this past school year.
The spirit of the book prompted our community into action. The goal, established in September, was to fund a well in South Sudan to bring fresh drinking water to children and their families who tragically suffer without this basic human right. All money raised would benefit the organization, Water for South Sudan was founded by the hero of Park's novel, Salva Dut. Students and staff even had the exciting opportunity to meet him in December when he delivered his TEDXBeaconStreet talk. (see the Pictures and Videos pages).
Fundraising has been ongoing all year. As of May, 2016, we are only hundreds of dollars away from our $15K goal! This donation to Water for South Sudan will enable Salva's organization to build a well AND help fund a new drilling rig. Hingham Middle School was one of 156 schools around the world that competed in the Iron Giraffe Challenge. This is the annual WFSS fundraiser for a new drilling rig to enable their organization to bring clean water to more villages in remote areas of this young country. Many thanks to Goodwin Graphics for partnering with us on this effort!
first annual HMS Long Walk/Run was on Saturday, May 13th!
This race was a great success! Thank you so much to Laurie Barry for her incredible organization of this event. See pictures on our "Pictures" page.
The mile race is symbolic of Salva's journey from his home in South Sudan, to America, and back again. The walk is symbolic of Nya's journey for water each day. Along the route, an additional challenge will be offered: walkers will have the opportunity to carry Nya's water from start to finish!
Parents: If you are willing to help with this event, please follow the link to sign up.
