In this module, participants will gain a deeper understanding of workers' compensation. When an employee is injured or becomes ill at work, needing medical attention beyond the regular first aid treatment, the SASA or complex area/state office secretary needs to assist with reporting the accident which caused the injury or illness. The SASA or secretary needs to understand the Workers’ Compensation program in order to assist the employee with the timely documentation required for proper payment of benefits and use of leaves.
Know who is covered by DOE’s workers’ compensation program, and who is not.
Be able to find Workers’ Compensation information and forms online.
Know what forms are required when an employee is involved in an accident, who should complete the forms, and the timeline for submitting them.
Understand why timely completion and submittal of the Employer’s Report of Industrial Injury forms is important.
Understand the purpose of the form for Notification and Election of Compensation for Industrial Injury.
Be able to explain to an employee the reasons for using accumulated sick or vacation leave to supplement Workers’ Compensation wage replacement payments.
Know what to do if the injured employee is not able to sign leave forms.
Understand the roles of the employee, supervisor, and SASA in documenting the accident.
Understand the roles of the OTM Workers’ Compensation Unit in administering Workers’ Compensation benefits.
Understand the roles of the DOE Payroll Section in administering Workers’ Compensation benefits.
Know what to do if there is a discrepancy between the Form 09 worksheet from Payroll and the leave recorded in Time and Attendance.
Understand the limitations of time-Off for Treatment of Industrial Injury.
Know what to do if the school needs to hire another employee to backfill for the injured employee.
Know what types of employees may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
Understand the purpose of the Return to Work Priority Program.
