Year 9 starts with one of world history's most defining events; World War I. The study includes the long and short-term causes of the war, as well as various aspects of the conflict itself - signing up, conscription, going 'over the top', the weapons, shell shock and the Battle of the Somme.

Our next series of lessons is on the inter-war years. This involves a look at communism and dictatorship, leading on to our second major topic and another seismic event; World War II. This begins with the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. This is followed by a look at life in Nazi Germany, the ghettos and then rounded off with an incredibly sobering, yet desperately important study of the Holocaust.

Before moving on to the GCSE course, we'll have a set of lessons on the 1960s. This'll include a look at the decade's music, its culture, work and leisure, as well as women's campaigns, migration and even the ending of the death penalty.
Once we've finished our look at the 1960s, we start the GCSE course. This is done in order to allow us to effectively cover off the increased volume of content that students are ultimately examined on. So for the final weeks of Year 9 we look at the first four years of the Cold War period; broadly speaking from 1945-49.
