WHO ARE WE?
The History Department at Hitchin Girls' School consists of four full-time History teachers: Miss Halil, Mr Hanse who's Head of Department, Ms Pottage and Mr Wright. Miss Plunkett and Miss Stojko also teach the subject to various year groups.
WHAT DO WE TEACH?
From Years 7 to 9, the subject is taught chronologically, starting with 1066 and the Battle of Hastings in Year 7, and culminating with a 20th-century study in Year 9. Plenty is covered in between, including the likes of the Black Death, the Tudors, slavery and the British Empire.
At GCSE, we study four major topics with the AQA exam board. These are: 'America, 1920-73', the 'Cold War, 1945-72', 'Health and the People, 1000-present', and 'Elizabethan England'.
For A Level, we use the Edexcel exam board to study 'Life in the GDR, 1949-90', 'Russia, 1917-91 - from Lenin to Yeltsin', and for our British study, 'Protest, Agitiation and Parliamentary Reform, 1780-1928'. There is also coursework worth 20% of the final mark, in which students look at the Russian Revolution of 1917.
Resources for every lesson are uploaded to Google Classroom.
WHAT WILL YOU FIND ON THIS WEBSITE?
A more detailed summary of the topics we study, along with the relevant links to BBC Bitesize and Britannica's online encyclopedia, can be found on the individual pages. For Years 7, 8 and 9, you'll also find School History worksheets that students can use to either cement or further their knowledge on the content we cover. On the Year 10 and Year 11 tabs, as well as on the Year 12 page, you'll find further material to help with consolidation and revision, including a series of School History slides. Meanwhile, the GCSE revision section includes even more material for students to access. There is also a separate tab featuring past exam papers and the corresponding mark schemes for both GCSE and A Level.
