5th Grade Banyan Trees

Students in 5th grade learned about Banyan trees and why they are so special! Students learned about positive and negative space and how to identify it in a work of art as well as incorporate the concept in their own landscape composition. Students learned about analogous colors and how to manipulate oil pastels to create blending in their tree and sunset. Lastly, students learned how to create the illusion of water using oil pastels.


Optical Illusions

Students in 5th Grade learned about Optical Art and the work of Op Artist, Victor Vasarely. Students learned how to create their own optical illusions using both straight lines and curved lines. Students also learned how to add shading to further enhance their illusions. Students created these illusions using only three art mediums: sharpie, white crayon and black crayon!

Japanese Notans

Students in 5th Grade learned about the art of notans. Notan is a Japanese term that means “light dark harmony”. It is a Japanese idea that refers to the balance between light and dark shapes in a work of art. Students learned about positive and negative space as well as contrast. Students then designed their own composition by cutting out geometric and/or organic shapes to create a balanced work of art!

Pop Art Zentangle Fruit Bowls

Students explored Pop Art and learned about renowned Pop Artists Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. Students created a still life fruit bowl in the style of Pop Art. Students studied a real fruit bowl and created fruit using shapes and lines. Lastly, students learned about the Zentangle Method and created various zentangles in the background of their composition!
