In this standard, students will acquire and apply word analysis skills effectively. This involves understanding the meaning of words and using language with precision across various contexts. The standard emphasizes enhancing students’ vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills.
As text complexity increases across grades 3–5, students should expand and deepen their vocabularies, build word analysis (morphology) skillsets, and apply their understanding of word meanings with precision in reading and writing. Students in 4th grade should demonstrate mastery of both the current 4th grade word list and the foundational words introduced in 3rd grade. Likewise, students in 5th grade should demonstrate a clear understanding of the word lists introduced in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades to support comprehension and communication in a variety of settings.
