Syntax and Semantics work together to help students understand and use language effectively. Syntax focuses on how words and sentences are structured, while semantics focuses on what words, phrases, and sentences mean.
Across the Georgia ELA Standards, students use syntax to build, analyze, and make intentional decisions about sentence structure. They use semantics to determine word meaning, develop vocabulary, and analyze how an author’s word choices shape meaning and purpose.
Syntax:
How is the language built?
Semantics:
What does the language mean?
