The Extended Essay

What is the Extended Essay?

This capstone project of the IB Diploma Program results in students writing an academic thesis paper of approximately 3,500 to 4,000 words. Building on the independent learning skills practiced in the Personal Project, students choose a topic related to one of the six academic subject areas and conduct independent research in response to a research question.

How are our students supported through this process?

Students are guided through the process by our Extended Essay coordinators, and each student is further supported by a faculty supervisor. Through this experience, our students become prepared to write and conduct independent research in the postsecondary world.

When would I write the Extended Essay?

At J.R. Tucker, the Extended Essay experience runs from the summer before the 11th grade year until May of the 11th grade year.

How is completion of the Extended Essay counted in earning the IB Diploma?

As part of the IB Diploma Program core, students must complete the Extended Essay and earn a "D" or higher to achieve the full IB diploma.
