What will I study?

This course leads to an A Level in English Literature. Students study a minimum of 8 texts over 2 years. Analysis explores the key areas of tragedy and political writing and there is also an opportunity to develop understanding of critical theory. Particularly for those committed to English study at university, taking this course alongside A Level English Language can be a powerful combination, giving students an impressive depth and breadth of understanding of all matters of English study

Course Content

This course will enable students to develop their analytical skills and powers of expression through the close study of thought-provoking and inspirational texts. Students will read classic examples of poetry, prose and drama, such as Othello by William Shakespeare, Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and poetry by William Blake.

The study of literature opens doors to a vast range of careers, including journalism, media, law, teaching, business, commerce – in fact, any field in which communication, the presentation of ideas, group discussion and analytical and creative thinking are valued.
