Lack of School Spirit
Lack of School Spirit

School spirit, especially in High Schools, is usually a big deal. Games against classes, class colors, school dances, spirit week, and just representing your school is extremely relevant especially in High School. Although some students enjoy participating in these events, the majority, especially at High Tech, don’t because, “there is no point since our school has no sports.”
According to students who attend High Tech, sports seems to be a very important topic. For example, high school sports games are huge at home schools: students making posters for their friends, chants being created throughout the games, and the entire student body participating in the theme and going full out. This is why our school is lacking that school spirit. And although there are many valid reasons why sports at High Tech wouldn’t work, it's truly the spirit the “Laser Cats” need.
At this point, the student council has done as much as they can to excite students, but nothing really works. At least not as much as regular town high schools or how you would even imagine high school in movies.
Another example of lack of school spirit is the lack of participation in something that's supposed to be a major school event. Homecoming dances. According to upperclassmen,High Tech's “homecoming” is something only freshmen do, with the expectation that it is going to be good. Some then say they were “disappointed.”
After hearing this from several students throughout school years, it seems like homecoming has lost excitement, and for a school that looks like the high school musical cafeteria, it's super unfortunate.
But this doesn’t represent the school in full. High Tech has its great moments of school spirit at times. Class competitions, dance, musical theatre performances, showcases, and how the student council not giving up on their class but finding new innovative ways to bring students together.
Maybe High Tech doesn't need to have sports to have school spirit, because not all problems are about not having sports. Most of the time, when a school spirit event occurs, kids don't participate because they think it's “cringey,” they think cheering loudly when someone wins is corny, but isn't it just way worse if only one person is cheering? Cringe culture has ruined school spirit.
Senior Aiden Diaz said, “People trying to be too cool for school. The second you try to participate in a school event I feel like I’m going to get made fun of. I feel embarrassed. We all just need to act our age and we are still kids so we should enjoy our time especially cause we're seniors. Go Laser Cats!”
Representing who is the best class won't matter when you're in college, but having something to look forward to and cheer for is exciting, and no one in your 20s is going to ask you why you wore a Halloween costume to school.
Although, being a little cringey is about growing up. Isn’t looking back at old photos and videos and thinking back, “what was I doing?” a part of life? At least you're having fun in a boring school filled with tests and long AP classes . We should make the most of what fun we’re able to control.
Until then, High Tech spirit weeks and the lack of participation will continue until school spirit rises and cringe culture dies.
