WW1 in the air...
Hundreds of planes swarmed the skies over the air over France, Germany, and Russia. The jobs they had were Fighting, patrolling, bombing, and scouting. The most famous of them all is the Red Baron of Germany. His kill count is 80. His skills became legendary after training with another German ace, Oswald Boelke. Oswald's kill count is 40.
Planes were fairly new in world war one and MUCH safer than today's fighters and bombers that are built for speed. However, many pilots died before becoming aces. (to be an ace you must shoot down 5 planes.) The fighters gave air cover to the trenches and protected bombers. these were also the planes that scouted.
Bombers early in the war were fighters with observers holding bombs or planes carrying flechettes. Later in the war Germans and British began building planes specifically to bomb. This is how the bomber plane was born.
