The Maddox clash
A treaty divided Vietnam into north and south.
Just about 5 years later, North Vietnam declared war on South Vietnam, creating one of the longest wars in history.
The USA joined the war after the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, a clash between the USS Maddox and a few North Vietnamese torpedo boats.
In March 1965, the Marine Corps arrived in Da Nang. By July, there were more than 50,000 US soldiers in Vietnam.
