The following subjects are compulsory for all students in Secondary 3:
English (EL)
Higher Chinese (HC)
Mathematics (MA)
Additional Mathematics (AM)
Social Studies (SS) & a non-examinable module on Appreciation of Chinese Culture (ACC) incorporated within Social Studies for non-BSP students
Humanities Elective
In addition, students are required to take other subjects as detailed in the sections below, to offer a total of 8 or 9 academic subjects. Request to offer 10 academic subjects will be subjected to approval.

The following are additional compulsory subjects for students in the talent programmes:
Computing (CP) - for students in Computing Talent Programme (CTP)
China Studies in Chinese (CSC) - for students in Bicultural Studies Programme (BSP)
Literature in Chinese (LC) - for students in Chinese Language Elective Programme (CLEP)
Literature in English (LE) - for students in Humanities Programme (HP)

Students can apply for the following as additional subjects based on subject combinations and eligibility criteria:
Biology (BI)
Computing (CP)
Theatre Studies (TS) [offered at Nanyang Girls' High School]
Advanced Music (AMU) [offered at Nanyang Girls' High School]
Students who are already in Art Elective Programme (AEP), Music Elective Programme (MEP) or in any of the 3rd language programmes can also continue with their additional subject in upper secondary. However, they will require approval from the school in order to take 10 academic subjects, e.g. the combination:
EL + HC + MA + AM + PH + CH + SS + Geography + Biology + Japanese as a 3rd language.
The following subjects are not classified under core academic subjects:
Oral Communication (OC)
Project Work (PW) [At least offered once in Sec 3 or 4]
