The syllabus and content is based on the ‘O’ Level Music Syllabus 6086.
The upper-sec program focuses on the Romantic Period and Early 20th Century Western Music.
The syllabus also includes Asian music studies, specifically Malay Dance Music and Indian Classical Music, as well as some Jazz studies.
The program includes performances studies. Students will be required to perform on their main instrument(s) and be involved in ensemble performances.
The program also includes a component in music composition.
Class Time
A weekly 3 hour class on Wednesday afternoons from 2:45pm to 5:45pm.
In Sec 3,
there will be two Formative Assessment Tasks:
Group Composition and Performance Task
One Analytical Research Paper.
There are 3 papers for Sec 3 End of Year Examination:
A written paper, that focuses on analysis and listening skills [40%]
A performance paper, where you have to perform on your first instrument, and a second instrument OR in an ensemble (including piano four-hands),
OR be an accompanist to a soloist. [30%]
A music composition coursework paper. [30%]
In Sec 4 ,
there will be two Formative Pen-and Paper Written assessments.
There are 4 papers for Sec 4 End of Year Examination:
A written paper, that focuses on analysis and listening skills [35%]
A performance paper, where you have to perform on your first instrument, and a second instrument OR in an ensemble (including piano four-hands),
OR be an accompanist to a soloist. [20%]
A music composition coursework paper. [20%]

There will be a performance audition where you need to play 2 contrasting pieces with a duration of about 5-10 mins.
There will be also be a written selection test that tests your listening skills and your theory knowledge.
Candidates should have a Grade 5 background in Western music theory OR at least understand the following concepts:
Diatonic Scales and Diatonic Harmony
Secondary Dominants
Sonata form, Fugues and other Classical and Baroque musical forms.
