Quality assurance mechanisms are especially important in dental radiography where obtaining a diagnostic image id necessary to detect disease. Perfecting the technique of taking diagnostic radiographs is important in order to minimize patient exposure to x-rays. Thus, it is important to take good radiographs on the first try. At the beginning of the semester, many technique errors were made such as the double exposed film in the image below. After lots of practice, I was able to make improvements in my technique when taking radiographs in order to avoid common errors such as horizontal angulation and horizontal placement. Below on the right is a radiograph that I took in week 12 of the semester, that is diagnostic with minimal errors. I will continue to practice my radiograph technique in upcoming semesters in order to meet quality assurance standards.

In dental materials lab we practiced making bleaching trays and sports guards. Working with dental materials is an important skill to learn in order to provide patients with individualized care. At home bleaching is a service that we provide for patients that want a whiter smile. It is important to practice making trays in order to make comfortable, effective bleaching trays for the patient since the bleaching material should not touch the gingiva. Practicing these skills multiple times helps us to make a top quality product for patient use.
In clinic, we always check for retakes after taking radiographs on a patient. This ensures that the doctor can see all pathology that can be seen in order to make a diagnosis. This is a quality assurance mechanism that not only allows for us as students to be held accountable but it gives us practice for how to determine a diagnositic image when we are licensed professionals.
