Lifelong learning is an important aspect of any career. Perfecting your skills and staying up to date with the most recent information and technology is especially important in Dental Hygiene. In Dental Anatomy, I created a set of clay teeth. In doing this, I broadened my knowledge of the distinct features within every tooth which helped me understand the anatomical features that a patient's tooth may have and how it may impact their individual needs. Through doing this project, I have been able to apply a hands-on approach to everything I have learned in Dental anatomy and will stick with me for a long time.
It is important as a dental hygienist to understand up to date research on topics such as periodontal disease. In Periodontics, I wrote a paper on the relationship between periodontal disease and pregnancy. Pregnancy can exacerbate gingivitis symptoms such as gingival inflammation. It has also been found that pregnancy can induce periodontitis. Therefore, it is important to educate pregnant women that it is extra important to take good care of their oral health since they are more at risk for these complications. In this paper, I also compared a couple scientific research articles with a consumer article. I talked about how consumer articles are important, if accurate for patient education and that research articles are great for the further education of the dental professional.
As a dental hygienist, it is important to stay up to date on current research and skills. In this class, we had an assignment to complete 10 continuing education credits, to prepare for when we have to do it to renew our licenses. This helped us determine resources where we can do continuing education and what it entails. Continuing education is important because dentistry and medicine is ever changing and there are always advances in research. As dental professionals it is our responsibility to stay up to date on what the research says so that we can educate our patients effectively.
