The primary role of a Dental Hygienist is to educate. Active involvement in the community is important in order to educate and give resources to those who may not have the access to proper dental care. For a community service project, we elected to donate dental hygiene products to a local shelter as part of the holiday food drive. We donated bags with toothbrushes, floss, Listerine, and toothpaste. During the holidays shelters receive a lot of canned goods but not a lot of toiletries. Dental supplies is a necessary toiletry that not many homeless people have or keep up with replacing. This was a simple way to give to those in need and promote good oral health.
During the Spring 2022 Semester, we decided to donate to the Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg. Our main focus, was to collect personal care items for personal hygiene. We put a collection box in the reception area for a couple weeks and asked students to donate. We all contibuted products including toothpaste, toothbrushes, bodywash etc. Making donations to those in need, makes a huge difference in how these people take care of their general health. Not everyone can afford general or oral health care and donating these products really makes a difference in the community.
During the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters we decided to decorate the clinic bulletin boards with fun, season appropriate decorations. During the fall we decorated it for thanksgiving and for the spring we decorated one for easter. We made the bulletin boards dental hygiene related with fun illustrations. This made the clinic feel more welcoming to our patients.
