Teachers will deliver effective everyday Tier 1 science instruction to all students in grades K-8 through the use of detailed curriculum maps, standards-aligned instructional resources, and intentional pedagogy.
K-12 science teachers, lead science teachers, and the Supervisor of Science & Technology will implement common assessments utilizing existing STEMscopes resources to measure student proficiency with targeted STE Practices.
In response to STE MCAS student performance data in grades 5 & 8, K-8 teachers will engage students with iterative process of creating and revising models of science concepts through use of the Investigative Phenomenon Modeling Tracker. Students should revise their model after each significant learning experience.
Support the growth and development of HHS Engineering and Biomedical Science Innovation Pathways in grades 9 through 12.

>> The daily data synch between SchoolBrains and STEMscopes does not allow educators with job titles other than "Teacher" to be allowed and given "one click access" via ClassLink. However, there is a process to provide access to these educators. Administrators and ESPs can request access to STEMscopes through a Google Form. CLICK HERE.
>> TIME FOR SCIENCE - K-4 teachers must teach science every day in the following time allotments:
K-2: 30 minutes/ day minimum
Gr.3 & 4: 35 minutes/ day minimum
These time allotments must not include transition time for lunch, recess, or dismissal.
Science curriculum map calendars in Google Shared Drive folders are being updated to reflect changes.
Like the sherpas who expertly lead their team up the slopes of Everest, the HPS Science Lead Teachers are here to support you and guide you around missteps. Please contact the lead teacher at your school OR one of the lead teachers at your grade level across the district for support.

Classroom Resources to Support Science Inquiry
Students benefit from a learning environment that contains visually engaging reference resources. Science classrooms should display the following resources to prompt, engage, guide and support students in their exploration of science phenomena.
*Vocabulary Walls
Please include science vocabulary with your existing word walls. While science terminology may be subject-specific (E.g.: erosion, life cycle, matter etc.), science shares a lot of academic vocabulary (analyze, diagram, evaluate, explain, model etc.) with other disciplines. So, an inclusive word wall design can support learning not only in science but also across subjects!
>> During the 2018-2019 school year, six of our science teachers in grades 6-12 participated in the DESE Science Ambassadors' STE Task Development Project, and FOUR of our teachers' tasks were accepted and are now available to science teachers everywhere via the DESE STEM Office website! Please follow the link below to see the thoughtful/ creative work of these talented science teachers.
Grade 7 - Ryan Jesionowski (Nettle) Task Title: Health of the Merrimack River and the Bald Eagle
Grade 8 - Kelly Mansour (Hunking) Task Title: Human Impact on Global Climate Change
HS Biology - Karen Blaustein (HHS) Task Title: Saving the Piping Plover: Analysis of Nest Loss Data
HS Chemistry - Emily Slyva (HHS, now of North Andover HS) Task Title: CO2 Emissions: The Chemistry Behind it and Why We Should Care
