Mission Statement:
The Social Studies/History department for the Haverhill Public Schools is committed to educating students in the histories of Massachusetts, the United States, and the world. Students will be prepared to make informed civic choices and be responsible for strengthening equality, justice, and liberty through critical thinking and the application of historical skills learned in the classroom.
Department Goals for the 2025-2026 School Year:
Support all teachers in delivering effective Tier I Social Studies/History instruction every day to ALL students, K-12
Continued strengthening of K-12 district-wide Social Studies/History department common assessments, as well as the collection and use of student achievement data to drive instruction and /or intervention for ALL students
Continued focus on high-quality civic education at the elementary and secondary levels with DESE grant funding and outreach to community partners.
Build upon departmental work around genocide education in middle and high school to provide students with high-quality experiential learning opportunities with DESE grant funding and community partnerships.
Intentionally designed professional development opportunities throughout the year to support educators in order to meet department goals

Haverhill will have staff AND students presenting at NCSS this month! HHS staff are showcasing their work around Genocide Education and the live, virtual Auschwitz tours; and 2 student Civic Action Projects will be on display as part of a DESE presentation: Social Media Use in Teens and Period Poverty (Hunking Care Box). So proud of these individuals and teams who are bringing positive attention to our AMAZING department!
