Make sure you have your video of a project
Using ipad.imovie, robots, computer , I created a code for a robot to drive around a chair because it was kind of cool to see it happen and plus it was easy and fun.
It was awesome watching something I coded actually move around and do what I told it to. I used iPads, iMovie, a robot, and a computer to make it all happen. It wasn’t super hard, which made it even better, and it was just fun to mess around with the robot and see it go around the chair like I planned.
During this process, I learned how to code a robot.
Before this project, I had no clue how to actually code something and get it to move. But by the end, I figured out how to make the robot follow directions through coding. It felt good to get it working and understand how everything connected.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to creative communicator because I created a video of it happening and that's content.
I recorded the robot doing the task and put it all together into a video. That’s basically creating content, which is a big part of being a creative communicator. I didn’t just build something—I showed the process and final result in a way other people could understand.
A challenge I overcame on this project was the robot not going the right direction. I was able to do it by reading the instructions.
The robot kept turning the wrong way or going off-track, and it got frustrating. But I went back, checked the instructions, and fixed my code. Once I did that, the robot finally started going the way I wanted it to.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the thing we were doing. The reason why I would change it is because we ran out of time because we were goofing around.
If I had another shot at this, I’d probably want to pick a different challenge or use the time better. We kind of wasted time just messing around, and by the end, we were rushing to finish. Next time, I’d try to stay more focused so we’d have more time to actually improve it.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the Computer Programming CTE program at Hastings High School.
Since this was all about writing code and controlling a robot through programming, it totally fits into the Computer Programming program. That’s what this kind of work is all about—solving problems with code.
My project connects to careers in coding because I coded a robot.
People in coding careers literally do what I did in this project—write code to make something happen. Whether it’s robots, websites, or apps, it all starts with learning the basics, and this was a good intro to that
