Using Cospaces, I created parkour game in space because it sounded fun.
I thought it would be cool to make a space-themed parkour game because I like games like that and wanted to try building one myself. Cospaces gave me the tools to make floating platforms and add movement, so I just went for it.
During this process, I learned how to code in Cospaces.
At first, the coding part was confusing, but after messing around and watching some tutorials, I learned how to use the blocks to make things move and react. I got the hang of how events and conditions work, which made everything come together.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative designer because.
I had to design the whole idea and build everything myself. I picked the theme, figured out how the game should work, and made it fun to play. That’s what an Innovative Designer does—make something original and try new things to solve problems.
A challenge I overcame on this project was making myself die. I was able to do it by creating a die variable and making if collision (Garret stole my code).
The hardest part was getting the character to “die” when hitting the wrong thing. I ended up creating a variable that would trigger when you collide with something. It took a bit, and yeah, Garret kind of copied my code, but I figured it out first.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change I would change the movement. The reason why I would change it is because you're supposed to be in space.
The movement feels kind of normal, like walking on the ground. If I could do it again, I’d try to make the movement more floaty or low-gravity so it actually feels like you’re in space. That would make the game more realistic and fun.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the engineering design CTE program at Hastings High School.
I used design tools, coding, and planning to build something from scratch, which totally fits into the engineering design program. It’s all about creating and testing ideas to make something that works.
My project connects to careers in video game developing because I developed a video game.
I had to think like a game developer—designing, coding, and testing the game until it worked. This is the kind of stuff real game developers do every day, so it gave me a little taste of what that job would be like.
