For this project, I will indeed be working alone.
What materials will you need for your project?
For this project, because I will be constructing my creation out of cardboard, Cardboard is likely the only material that I will need, along with a pair of scissors and some glue.
What is your plan to create in this project?
For this project, I will be making a cardboard ski-ball machine.
What unique qualities will your project have?
My project is unique because it will have a deeper meaning behind it. When I was little, my family would occasionally take me to an arcade. There were always tons of games there, but I would always spend hours upon hours on the ski-ball. It was always my favorite arcade game. That is where the inspiration for this project came.
Using a few cardboard boxes, some glue, and a pair of scissors, I created an arcade-style ski-ball machine. I decided to construct this for a number of reasons. The first being that the classic ski-ball game is one of my favorite arcade machines. I used to spend hours wasting money on them. The second reason being that I felt like this would be a fun challenge to test my ability to model off of something that already exists.
During this process, I learned about how a ski-ball machine works. It's actually quite simple. When you put in your form of payment, a gate will open for just long enough for all the balls to slide out. When you throw the balls up the ramp, and they go into one of the many holes, they go down a secondary ramp and end up back behind the gate.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project most strongly ties into Empowered Learner. This is because being an Empowered Learner is all about setting standards and adapting your learning environment to fit what you need, and using various technologies to do so. In this project, I was able to adapt to my materials in order to create what I needed.
A challenge I overcame on this project was making the actual balls needed to play the game. I went through several designs before I settled on the one I decided to use. I made these new balls by
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the amount of time given to work on this project. While working on this project, I felt quite crunched for time, and really wish I had more time to work on it. Other than that, however, I am very satisfied with my results.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project most strongly connects to the Construction Trades CTE program at Hastings High School. This would be because Construction Trades is all about designing and engineering different construction. I feel that my project heavily relates to this subject, as this project heavily revolves around construction and engineering.
For this project, I, unfortunately, cannot provide Pictures of my creation in progress, via I completed this in a time crunch. I ended up changing my project last-minute, and had to finish in one day. I can only supply images and a video of the final product.
