Are you working by yourself or with a team?
I am working alone because we don't have a choice. I'm also remodeling a part of my house, so it would be quite an inconvenience anyway.
What materials will you need for your project?
I am creating a world in VR, so the only material I will need is my computer.
What is your plan to create in this project?
I plan to remodel my real-life kitchen in a VR world.
What unique qualities will your project have?
Well, in real life, my family is planning on remodeling our kitchen. But we don't really know where to begin. Hopefuly, being able to experiment with this in VR will help us decide on a design we like.
Using CoSpaces, an AR/VR designing platform, I remodeled my kitchen. This is because, In real life, my kitchen is getting remodeled this upcoming spring. However, we've had trouble trying to figure out what we want to do. Planning everything out in VR lets us experiment with different designs, and choose what we like best.
During this process, I learned a lot about how to manage space. Currently, there is quite a bit of unused space next to our kitchen. In VR, I was able to make this fit in more, as well as give the whole kitchen more space. I also learned a bit about color pallets and what goes well together. Our house has a rustic sort of theme. It was difficult finding colors that would go with the rest of the house, but after some experimenting, I found the perfect theme and style to go for.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties into Creative Communicator because Creative Communicator is all about expressing your idea in an innovative, unique way, and about experimenting with different styles until you find just the right thing. In this project, that was all I was doing, and my end goal is to express my idea, just like a Creative Communicator.
A challenge I overcame on this project was, as I mentioned before, finding a theme to go with the rustic style of the rest of our house. I was able to do it by experimenting with lots of different themes and styles until I found what I was looking for.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change absolutely nothing. The reason why I wouldn't change anything is that this project was a huge success. It went very smoothly and rolled right along. I didn't encounter very many issues at all and am very happy with the end result.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the Construction Trades CTE program at Hastings High School. Construction Trades is all about designing and engineering different construction. I feel that my project heavily relates to this subject.
For this project, I will be using CoSpaces, a VR design platform, to remodel my real-life kitchen. CoSpaces offers a variety of preset utilities, and I will be using many of these in my kitchen.
The first thing I need to do is figure out what I want to use for the floor. I choose a large-tiled texture with a sand-like color.
I now need to make the walls. My house has a dried paint texture with a rough-sown-cedar base about 2 feet up from the floor. I used two different overlapping tiles to mimic this in CoSpaces.
In our kitchen, there are two sets of sliding glass doors that lead out to the back deck. I use glass walls and wooden beams to recreate this is CoSpaces
Now I can plot out the basic shape of the whole kitchen. I take some measurements first, so I can be sure that I'm as accurate as I can get. I also add in windows using the same method I used for the glass doors.
Here, I add some curtains and a small sofa, just to add a bit of detail. I also added a clock and a small table with flowers.
On the outside of our kitchen, we have a small bar with a few bar stools. I decided to enlarge this a bit, and add a section of the ceiling coming down with some lights.
Now it's time to work on the actual kitchen. I start by adding in already-existing details, like the fridge and dishwasher, as well as a few overhead cabinets and some counter space.
Here, I finish up the counter space, as well as add an oven and sink. I also added a custom lazy-Suzanne in the corner.
Unfortunately, CoSpaces does not have a preset microwave, so I have to make a custom one. I also add a stone pattern behind the oven, just as a bit of subtle detail to finish it up.
Now I need to work on the dining area. because CoSpaces doesn't have a round table, I have to use a rectangular one. I also add chairs, and offset them, just as a bit of detail. In addition, I added a bit of existing counter space and cabinets to the left of the table.
Now, I'm going back and adding additional detail. I add a second overhead light, as well as placemats on the dining table.
In real life, I have a golden retriever named Jake. I thought it would be a fun idea to add him in the kitchen as well.
And now I'm finally done! To top it all off, here is a short video of me walking through my newly remodeled kitchen.
