8P3 - Monitor

Using an old computer and tools, I created a car because I thought it would be fun. During this process, I learned a lot about the inside of a computer and how various parts work together. It was interesting to see how components like the motherboard and wiring could be repurposed for something completely different, which was a valuable learning experience.

The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to the Creative Communicator standard because I talked with others about how to take the computer apart and use its parts in a new way. Communicating with others helped me brainstorm ideas and solve problems I encountered along the way.

A challenge I overcame on this project was figuring out what I should do with the computer parts. I didn’t know exactly how to start, but I was able to get ideas and feedback from other people who had experience with similar projects. This collaboration was essential in helping me find direction and successfully transform the computer into a car.

Given a chance to do this again, I would definitely change the top of the car. The design of the top didn’t come out as I had envisioned, and it didn’t look like a real car roof. If I had more time and resources, I’d redesign it to make it more visually appealing and functional, which would make the whole project feel more complete.

Hastings High School’s Career and Technical Education Program offers a variety of specialized programs, including Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project connects to the Engineering Design CTE program at Hastings High School because I used design thinking and hands-on skills to repurpose a computer into a car. This process involved critical thinking and technical skills that align with what is taught in the Engineering Design program.
