Streamlining the FAFSA form.
The PELL grant eligibility will be broader, linking eligibility to family size and federal poverty level.
Students and Parents will BOTH be required to give consent/permission to utilize the Data Direct Exchange tool with the IRS for tax information. FUTURE Act.
The report will provide each family with their Student Aid Index, SAI (formerly the Estimated Family Contribution). This number can be a negative number.
Clarity on who is a contributor: Which parent(s) financial information and family members are included on the FAFSA. Expanded guidance on determining the contributor in a divorced/separated parent household.
Contributors without a Social Security Number will now be able to submit their FAFSA on-line, rather than by mail.
Students will invite contributor(s) to complete their portion, by submitting identifying information for each contributor, including legal name (name on Social Security card), date of birth, Social Security Number (SSN), mailing address and an email address.
Number in college will still be asked; but will not be determined in the formula matrix for the SAI.
if your family size is different from your filed tax returns, you will have an opportunity to manually update the information.
What Stays the Same:
Your log-in information is still the same, if you and your contributors have already one. It will now be called your studentaid.gov account.
Completing the FAFSA is still required for access to Federal student loans, Parent PLUS loans, potential federal grant eligibility.
Prior-Prior year taxes, so the 26-27 form will utilize your 2024 Federal Income Tax return information.
Additional questions about assets/investments will still require manual entry, if prompted.
Dependency Status Questions will remain the same, to determine if require a contributor's financial information.
Statistical questions still included, which do not have effects on federal aid eligibility.
Student Rights and Responsibilities have not changed.
Federal education loan requirements remain the same.
