A SAP referral is primarily made to assist students in overcoming any obstacles that may affect their learning/success while in school. Obstacles can include (but are not limited to): academics, attendance, mental health, behavioral concerns, alcohol/substance abuse, etc.
Referrals can be made by almost anyone including principals, school counselors, teachers, parents/guardians, even students themselves.

No. The SAP Liaisons are employed by Westmoreland Casemanagement and Supports Inc (WCSI) however they work closely with school personnel and are familiar with the school culture for the district in which they are assigned to.
After a SAP Liaison makes contact with a family they will work to schedule an assessment with the family and student. The SAP Liaison will help students and families connect with recommended services based on the information provided by the family during the assessment. The SAP liaison will work with the family to discuss what services are available and appropriate regarding behavioral health. The SAP Liaison will then continue to check in with the family via phone to ensure they were able to obtain services and follow-up as needed.
The core of the Student Assistance Program is a professionally trained team, including school staff and liaisons from community drug and alcohol and mental health agencies. SAP team members are trained to identify issues, determine whether or not the presenting issue lies within the responsibility of the school, and to make recommendations to assist the student and the parent. When the issue lies beyond the scope of the school, the SAP team will assist the parent and student so they may access services within the community. SAP team members do not diagnose, treat or refer to treatment; but they may refer a student to a liaison who may screen or assess for further community based services and support .
There is no cost or insurance billed to have an SAP assessment. If a liaison recommends a treatment service, they will discuss insurance or other payment with the family at the time of the assessment and referral.
