Student-Centered
Advisory Program
Advisory programs are configurations in which teachers meet regularly with a small group of students to provide academic and social-emotional mentorship and support, to create personalization within the school, and to facilitate a small peer community of learners.
Advisory groups at WHMS are approximately 13-14 students. Students are matched up with this staff member for all three years of their middle school years. For the 2020-2021 school year, WHMS students were able to make the choice of who they would like to have as their advisor. To ensure students had some familiarity with all potential advisors, staff members produced 1-2 minute videos introducing themselves. Students then picked who they feel they would match up best with.
Advisory meetings are held at least twice per month. Advisory will have at least 1 morning meeting per month, usually immediately following a break or 3 day weekend. These meetings are "open ideas" determined by the advisor and the students. The main goal of these meetings is for the students and advisor to make connections with each other.
Afternoon meetings (during Activity period) are more scripted. Subjects of these meetings will be delivering information, checking on grades, PBIS booster lessons but are primarily related to Bully Prevention. Below are the afternoon lessons we have scheduled for the 2020-2021 school year:
Goal Setting
