Our central idea this term is 'Many living things play an important role in keeping the planet healthy'.
We will be exploring the following lines of inquiry:
Actions have consequences. (Causation)
Working together will help to maintain a healthy planet. (Change)
Our actions can make a difference. (Responsibility)
This week we have been continuing our work on seasons and learning about winter. We went for a walk around the school to spot signs of winter.
We looked at the Oak tree on the bottom field. We now know it is a deciduous tree because all of the leaves have fallen off. We will check this tree again next term to see if it has changed.
We also revisited the Holly in the woods. We noticed that the leaves were still dark green and shiny. We now know this is evergreen. We will come back to the Holly next term to see if it has changed.
This week we showed that we were knowledgeable by using what we found out about winter to write an acrostic poem. We worked in groups before writing our own poems.
We have also been keeping a daily weather diary to record what the weather is like each day. We will repeat this in the summer so that we can compare the weather between the two seasons.

This week we learnt about the celebration of Lohri. We heard a lovely story about this event which is celebrated on the 13th January. Lohri marks the end of the winter season in India and allows famers to show their gratitude for their crops. To celebrate this festival, sweet treats are exchanged, bonfires are lit and people enjoy singing and dancing.
As part of our DT this term, we will be looking at wheels and axles. We enjoyed exploring different objects with wheels.
We worked with our learning partner to connect parts of a vehicle together. It was tricky but we were great thinkers and problem solvers.
We have continued to keep a weather diary this week. It has been very icy and cold.

This week we have enjoyed continuing our DT project. We designed our vehicles and decided as a class what the purpose of making them could be. Elm class voted to race their vehicles and Oak class voted to share them with Reception. We had great fun putting them together during our Stay and Play afternoon. Our final cars looked absolutely amazing!

We have had another term of fantastic Inquiry Project presentations in Year 1! It has been lovely to see the children confidently and proudly sharing thier posters, artwork, bookets and videos with the class. We have heard about many different types of endangered animals and learnt about the causes of their limited numbers.
