Our central idea this term is 'A balanced lifestyle may contribute to good health and wellbeing'.
We will be exploring the following lines of inquiry:
What our bodies are made up of. (Function)
How a healthy body can lead to a healthy mind. (Connection)
The role we play to keep ourselves healthy. (Responsibility)
We have had a great first two weeks at school. We have enjoyed making new friends and exploring the Year 1 classrooms and outdoor areas.
For our Inquiry work, we have been looking at where we live and our bodies. We have shown that we are very knowledgeable and have been working hard to rememeber the names of the four countries and capital cities of the UK.
We enjoyed using a Paint programme on the iPads to create a self portrait.
This week, we enjoyed becoming inquirers when using our senses to identify different objects.
We put our hands in feely bags to feel what was inside.
We used our nose to smell what was in each pot.
We used our eyes to look at different objects. We used a magnifying glass to see more closely.
In Maths this week we looked at addition. We enjoyed using manipulatives to show how knowledgeable we are.
We also learned how to use some different tools in Computing. We made artwork in the style of Piet Mondrian, using the shape and fill tools.
In Computing this week, we made artwork in the style of Kandinsky. We enjoyed using the shape tools and selecting different colours to fill the shapes.
In Maths this week we used the part-part whole. We enjoyed using our thinking skills to find the different ways we could make the whole number.
We had great fun learning about different food groups this week! We used our senses of sight, smell, touch and taste to decide if we liked them or not.
The grapes tasted juicy.
The orange tasted sour.
The blueberries were small.
As part of DT, we decided to make a fruit salad as a healthy snack. We chose the different fruits we wanted to use and learnt how to cut them safely. They looked tasty!
In our Art lessons this term, we have been learning how to draw. We have worked hard to use our observations to draw from real life.
We looked at the artist Paul Cezanne. We liked the way he painted different set up scenes and we noticed that these often included fruit. In our Art lesson this week, we had different arrangements set up on our tables and we drew them using our obervation skills. We worked incredibly hard and showed what amazing artists we are.
Throughout the year, we will be exploring the different seasons. This week we went on a walk to spot signs of Autumn. We noticed that the ground was wetter than it had been and there were many leaves on the floor. We learnt about evergreen and deciduous trees.
We looked at the Oak tree on the bottom field. We think it is deciduous because some of the leaves were turning brown and there were lots of Oak leaves on the floor. We will check this tree again next term to see if it has changed.
We found some Holly in the woods. We noticed that the leaves were still dark green and shiny. We think this is evergreen. We will come back to the Holly next term to see if it has changed.
We have had some amazing Inquiry Project presentations this term. The children were able to show fantastic communication skills when talking about what they had done to the rest of the class. It is always interesting to see the range of different projects that have been created. This term we had fantastic posters promoting healthy eating and/or exercise, amazing models, marvellous menus and some super videos showing delicious healthy snacks and tiring exercise routines.
