How can we improve the quality of our soil to help us grow healthy gardens?
In third grade, students tackle the driving question, "How can we improve soil quality for healthier gardens?" Through a blend of math, science, and fine arts, they delve into various activities. They engage in vermicomposting to understand soil health while tracking moisture data and temperature fluctuations and applying math in analysis. Collaborating with community partners, they learn about soil management and Native American gardening practices. Students explore composting, prepare soil in compost bins, and investigate greenhouse effects on plant growth, integrating scientific inquiry. They use PAIR strategies to communicate scientific concepts through theater and create artwork depicting plant growth above and below the soil, reinforcing science while using visual arts to communicate what they learn.
