How can we increase agriculture and agricultural awareness in our school?
In fourth grade, students delve into the driving question, "How can we increase agriculture and agricultural awareness in our school?" Initially, they focused on increasing communication within the school and community regarding agriculture. This was accomplished by utilizing the school news platform and creating "ag pots" to showcase garden beds. Following feedback from the GaDOE STEAM community, they shifted their focus away from "ag pots" to address the primary problem of unawareness of agricultural activities across grade levels. Now, students are applying their math standards to analyze data collected from students and teachers to determine how the level of awareness is changing. They utilize research skills to explore various agricultural careers tied to each grade level that they share with K-3 grade students. To do this, they are collaborating with community partners, including marketing and design specialists. They will create informational career boards to educate the school community about the diverse opportunities in agriculture. Additionally, students use theater strategies to communicate these careers through a wax museum, presenting a culminating performance to all students, thus promoting agricultural awareness and appreciation throughout the school.
