School Counselors are trained professionals who are credentialed by the state (similar to teachers) in the area of school counseling.
School counseling is meant to encourage students' academic, social, emotional, and personal development through providing a variety of services on a school campus.
Through classroom guidance, small groups, individual services, and daily interactions on campus, school counseling aims to help students get to know themselves better, understand and manage emotions, find strategies to be successful academically, and to have a toolbox full of tools and solutions for managing daily challenges and conflicts that may arise.Â
School Counseling VS Therapy
School counselors provide short-term, goal-focused support to help students overcome challenges that may be impacting their academic success, behavior, or social-emotional well-being at school. In individual counseling, a school counselor might help a student:
Problem-solve friendship issues
Manage school-related stress or anxiety
Cope with changes like a family move or divorce
Develop self-regulation and coping skills
Set goals and build confidence
Therapists are licensend mental health professionals who work with individuals, families, or groups to help them manage and heal from emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges. Therapy is typically more intensive and long-term than school counsenling.
