The Counseling Office is located in the Black Oak classroom. Services and programs offered have expanded in this new space! Our counseling program at HUSD follows the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. We focus on three domains: Academic, Social/Emotional, and College/Career.
This year, we are thrilled to partner with Sonoma State University and host a counseling intern who is on our campus two days a week.
Specific counseling programs/services can be found on this page, along with some of the curriculum used in our SEL lessons and in small groups.
Students have regular contact with the school counselor throughout the year, including check-ins, during recess breaks, and around campus.
If you have any questions, please never hesitate to reach out to Rebecca.
School-Wide Activities
Recess: The Black Oak Counseling Room is open to students every day at recess. 3rd-8th grade students have access to a variety of activities. Some favorites include: Legos, Perler Beads, Miniature Pool, Kinetic Sand, Rubberband Bracelet Making, and Board Games. Students play in multi-grade groups and are part of a community learning valuable skills such as sharing, teamwork, perseverance, and responsibility.
Lunch Time Clubs: A variety of lunch time clubs are offered in the Black Oak Counseling Room for students in 6th-8th grade. These have included: Mario Club, Amor Para Todos, Board/Card Game Club, and open drop-in times.
The Safe School Ambassadors® Program (SSA) is our evidence-based program that harnesses the power of students to prevent and stop bullying and mistreatment. The SSA Program is a student-centered model that educates diverse social leaders with the skills to prevent and reduce bullying. It relies on the “inside-out” approach to improving school climate. Student bystanders see, hear, and know things adults don’t, can intervene in ways adults can’t and are often on the scene of an incident before an adult. They are a critical and necessary resource for positively impacting the crisis of bullying in our schools. Click the link below to learn more.
Classroom Instruction
Advisory: Students in 7th & 8th grade have a weekly advisory class taught by the classroom teachers, school counselor, and school pyschologist. Topics range from: high school/college, financial literacy, current events, digital wellness, learning styles, and mindfulness.
Classroom Guidance Lessons: Second Step is the school-wide Social/Emotional Learning curriculum. While the counselor does teach these lesson dependent on grade, most of these lessons are delivered by the classroom teacher. In the Kindergarten classroom, the Little Spots books & curriculum are used to develop emotional literacy and an introduction to recognizing, understanding, and communicating feelings.
Small Group Counseling
Small Group Counseling is designed to provide students with a supportive space to build specific skills. Small Group counseling also allows for the development of peer relationship, practicing communication skills, and exploring strategies for handling everyday school and life. Group topics can vary widely, but often include ones such as: friendship, self-esteem, emotional regulation, organizational skills, self-regulation skills, and social skill development. Groups might also be guided by curriculum, such as Zones of Regulation and the Toolbox Project (among others). Groups typically last 6-8 weeks.
Individual Counseling
Individual counseling offers students one-on-one support to help them navigate personal, social, emotional, or academic challenges. In a safe and confidential setting, students can express themselves freely, build coping strategies, and developing problem-solving skills. Whether they’re experiencing anxiety, grief, peer conflict, or simply need someone to talk to, individual counseling provides personalized support that promotes student well-being and success.
