The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization to promote international cooperation established in 1945 after World War II in order to prevent another such conflict. The UN replaced the League of Nations, an organization that also attempted to promote cooperation among nations after World War I. In 1948, the UN General Assembly drafted [wrote] the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The United Nations Human Rights Council is a United Nations body whose mission is to promote and protect human rights around the world. The UNHRC has 47 members elected for staggered three-year terms on a regional group basis. The headquarters of UNHRC is in Geneva, Switzerland
What Are Human Rights?
Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Everyone is entitled to these rights, without discrimination.
International Human Rights Law
International human rights law lays down the obligations of Governments to act in certain ways or to refrain from certain acts, in order to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of individuals or groups.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
One of the great achievements of the United Nations is the creation of a comprehensive body of human rights law—a universal and internationally protected code to which all nations can subscribe and all people aspire.
Project Directions:
Students will work in groups as part of a NGO (Non Government Organization: a nonprofit organization that operates independently of any government, typically one whose purpose is to address a social or political issue). This NGO will examine the human rights violations of a specific country. Your job is to bring awareness of ONE violation to United Nations Council on Human Rights, also known as the OHCR (the class).
HOW to bring AWARENESS:
Some countries have many human rights abuses, your NGO will provide detail on ONE violation. For example, China may be accused of abusing their citizens’ freedom of speech, assembly and detaining Uyghurs illegally; choose ONE abuse on which to focus.
There are many sitting on the United Nations Council on Human Rights who are skeptical that any violations of human rights are occuring.
Your NGO needs to include the following in your presentation:
Photographs
Statistics
Maps
Specific, and detailed evidence.
