From Monday-Wednesday of March 23-25, 42 of the DVA 8th graders (and 2 teachers and 8 parents) got to enjoy the BIG DVA trip to Savannah! There were so many stops and so many learning experiences! These handful of pictures could never do it justice.
Our first stop was at Go Fish in Perry, GA! The students got to fish and learn about different types of fish/animals and how they related to the regions and watersheds of GA! The regions of GA is the first unit they study in GA Studies in 8th grade. So many students caught fish I lost count - mainly bluegill, but also some catfish. The tour guides were all knowledgeable and helpful. They also had some fun simulators! For the first time, they took us back into the hatchery and we saw Walleye eggs! We then went to downtown perry and enjoyed an amazing lunch.
If you ever find yourself in Perry, GA - please go check out the Perfect Pair! They were so kind to us and treated our students to such a nice lunch!!
This was way more than just visiting an old fort. The tour guide addressed the students as soldiers as soon as we exited the bus. They taught them the different flag signals, how to load a musket, and different medical ailments and treatments during the civil war. They also fired the cannon for us!! It was INCREDIBLE. And then we ended the evening with a fun dinner at Mellow Mushroom!
Ended a very long Day 1 with an awesome dinner!
Our first stop of the day was at Tybee Island and the new Marine Center. The students got to observe the animals in the aquariums and touch tanks in the center. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and accommodating. it was VERY windy on the beach so we couldn't comb for animals as originally planned, but we got to hear some great information and at least get our toes in the sand! This information was a good review of life science from 7th grade and reminiscent of their big 7th grade field trip to Jekyll Island.
This was a new stop for Coach Greene! Because of the incredibly high winds, the dolphin tour company cancelled and we had to pivot and find a replacement tour. Our tour guide knew several of our students had learned about the Gullah Geechee culture earlier this year in our museum, and had contacts at Pin Point and were able to get us in there last minute!
Everyone got about 1 hour on River Street in between PinPoint and the Walking Tour of Savannah. The students got to walk, shop and buy ice cream and candy.
After River Street, our tour started at the Cathedral and ended at Massey Schoolhouse. The Cathedral was absolutely gorgeous and pictures don't do it justice! We saw the beautiful stained glass, the 14 stories of Jesus' last day on earth, the pipe organs, gothic ceilings, etc. It was simply breathtaking being inside.
A day in the life... oh how different school-age children had it back then!
After the walking tour ended at Massey, we then walked over to the Pirate House. We had a 2 private rooms and the most AMAZING buffet dinner with fish, chicken, shrimp, green beans, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese and banana pudding! Then we ended the night with a Ghost Trolley Tour around downtown Savannah. They also threw in a lot of great history as we rode around in the trolley.
After an early morning boarding the bus from Savannah, our first stop was the old Governor's Mansion for a tour. The house was large and amazing! So many original pieces in the house and such rich history. Milledgeville served as Georgia capital from 1804-1868, and this house completed construction for governors to live in 1839.
After visiting the Governor's Mansion, we headed over to Georgia College and at in their students dinning hall (students were impressed with all of the great food options for lunch!!). And then we rode through Milledgeville on our bus with a tour guide explaining Milledgeville history.
On our way back home to DVA, our last stop was to Andalusia to see Flannery O'Conner's home. We got a tour of her home and got to explore the grounds.
We got back to the hotel room a little early, and some students were able to hang out and enjoy some games down in the hotel lobby! Also just other fun things - rest stops, long bus rides, etc.!
