WE DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY!
December was a busy 3 weeks to finish up the first semester. We continued where we left off before Thanksgiving Break with the middle of Unit 4A. Students looked at 4 different ways to find factors of a polynomial. These four methods are just factoring the polynomial, by square roots, by completing the square, and by using the quadratic formula. Students took their 4th CBA of the year (only 4 more to go!). The final week of this semester was spent studying for their Mid-term which would replace their lowest Test score.
December brought an end to our study of Romeo and Juliet, as we finished the play and acted our the tragic heroes' doomed love (with simulated poison, swords, and daggers). When we weren't performing the play, we were preparing for the Unit 2 CBA, practicing our narrative writing through WeWillWrite.com, and engaging in primary source analysis of a Sixteenth Century book about Elizabethan courtship. When we come back in January, we'll be turning our attention to To Kill a Mockingbird and argumentative writing techniques!
This month we've been discussing the division of America during the Civil War period. The roles of important issues of the time period like slavery, states' rights, nullification, and the Election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. The students were asked to make some brochures explaining how the Causes of the Civil War specifically played a role in Georgia's development as a state. Then we discussed the significant battles of the Civil War, including the Battle of Chickamauga Georgia in Northern GA.
Once that was done, we discussed Georgia's path to rebuilding during the Reconstruction Era, and the different plans of President Lincoln, succeeded prematurely by Andrew Johnson. Then, because they felt the Presidential plans were too lenient, Congress decided to take over Reconstruction, leaving no mercy for the Southern (formerly Confederate) states. When we get back from break, we'll discuss the New South era in Georgia, and how our progression as a state was shaped by our post-Reconstruction activity!
December has been all about Unit 4: WAVES! And not just ocean waves because it's winter and I wish it were summer and we were at the beach... we learned about all kind of electromagnetic and mechanical waves! We did some waves exploration stations where we learned about the parts of a wave, sound waves, light waves, reflection, refraction, etc. See the pictures below. We also went outside with UV beads in different colored bottles to see how medicine bottles protect our prescription medicine from UV rays just like sunscreen protects our skin.
We also had a very interesting and relevant Socratic Discussion about "The Waves Around Us" were we read an article about a woman with a sensitivity to low frequency EM waves (radio waves and microwaves) and then researched to see if this was a real issue that could potentially affect the physical and mental health of people. This is definitely a conversation that I hope continues! And I believe will become more and more relevant in their lifetimes as more research comes out on this topic.
This semester concluded the physics half of this course. Starting in January we will be learning chemistry! Gas Laws, periodic table/nuclear, chemical bonding/reactions, and solutions! Start discussing with your students about labels on food, medicines, cleaning supplies, etc. and trying to identify different elements in the chemical compounds in our products!
On Friday January 9, JHS will be coming to South Hall to discuss and get students registered for classes. So any DVA students going to JHS or applying to JISA will be involved in that process on that day.
On Monday January 12, FBHS will be coming to do the same thing for our students either applying for STEAM or attending FBHS next year.
We are so excited for all of our students who applied for their HS Programs of Choice this month! Teachers are now filling our recommendations (due in Jan), and then they will review applications and let students know in February - very similar timeline as to when your student was accepted into DVA!
In the meantime, some of the high schools are having pre-registration nights in January. See FBHS and CBHS flyers below. If your student applied to POC to those schools, please plan to attend and go ahead and start the registration process so they can get the electives they want!
Dr. Elrod has also done Zoom meetings with the students applying to Legacy, Race, etc. to get their questions answered this month from program coordinators and other students.
Academic Team did AMAZING at PAGE on Dec 6 - best SHMS/DVA has done in YEARS finishing 4-3 for the day! We played some tough Fulton and Forsyth middle school teams really well. Most of our team is 6th and 7th graders, so we are going to keep practicing and go to another tournament in the Spring to be ready for our regular season again next Fall!
All 10 players could collaborate on the worksheet rounds even if they weren't currently in the game! Loved seeing them ALL work together at one time! Coach Holli Greene is very proud of ALL of her players this season!!
Games club meets every Thursday after school and has a lot of our DVA students participating with Mr. Wildeboer as the sponsor! Bre's mom Amber Wilburn also comes in and helps students bringing her gaming expertise! Pictures above of some of your students participating.
Basketball season is in full swing! We have A LOT of DVA players represented on both the boys and girls A and B teams. And the cheerleaders! And our very own Coach Jason Greene is the coach of the Boys A team. See below for a full schedules to come support all 4 of our teams! The boys went to JHS on Friday Dec 5 to be recognized during their varsity game at Middle School Night. And a lot of former DVA students were there to support!
We have several students participating in the Frozen play at JHS in January! Please save the date and come see our students perform with the JHS Starry Knight Players!
Friday January 23rd at 7 pm
Saturday January 24th at 3 pm and 7 pm
The link to order a yearbook online is https://www.yearbookordercenter.com/index.cfm/job/15243 and the same link can be used to order an 8th grade ad.
Also, our yearbook company has set our sales to close on February 27th which is a bit earlier than past years. Please encourage your students to order their yearbooks sooner than later so that they aren’t left without one!
Fundraisers are continuing. Thank you to everyone who is contributing to the CFA biscuit sales and the Nothing Bundt Cake Sales! You should be receiving information from Mr. Wildeboer about your final payment after all the fundraising money has been collected. Also, if you are a chaperone, you will be receiving an email about your final payment and room assignments as well.
Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Enjoy this time of rest and reflection and we will see students back on Tuesday January 6.
