WE DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY!
Our museum is getting ready for the Open House Showcase on Monday October 6 from 4:00-6:00 pm!
We are so excited to highlight some amazing aspects of Georgia to Hall County 5th graders who will be able to come through our museum on their field trips! Our field trips run from Sept 30 through Oct 23. A copy of the presentation schedule can be found here.
Enjoy some pictures of our students building and presenting the museum!
The students took the CBA on September 18th. The following week, we started on Unit 2. This unit began with learning how to graph inequalities the same way we would a linear equation, but focused on how the line looked (dashed or solid) and which way to shade based off the inequality sign in the problem. To finish out September, we looked at how to determine if 2 lines were parallel or perpendicular based on their slope. We also started systems of equations by learning how to graph 2 or more equations in order to find where they might intersect. We will continue finding 2 other ways to find a solution to a system of equations without using a graph in the beginning of October.
September has been all over the place with our topics in English Lit/Comp I! The beginning of September, we were busy with our informational writing, as well as presenting about the Greek gods the students researched. From there, students learned about the idealism and individualism of the Transcendentalist movement, including the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. After that, we turned our attention to the Modernists as they challenged traditional definitions of art, literature, and the nature of a hero.
September was all about Motion and Force! Students learned about the concept Newton's Laws, Free Fall, how simple machines affect work and mechanical advantage. They did a variety of exploration stations, card sorts, etc. Above you can see a level with different fulcrum points to show the force-distance tradeoff! Below you can see Newton's 2nd Law (F=ma) in action on the rolling boards!
The Socratic Discussion about "Should we Journey into the Unknown?" was awesome! In the light of recent events with SpaceX rescuing astronauts at the ISS, the submersible Titan implosion, etc. these are very real issues that they will be dealing with in their lifetime! I'm so glad we got to start these conversations that I hope will only continue at home. The Q2 Socratic Discussion will be "the waves around us" and debating whether or not all these radio/microwaves producing communication with our cell phones, ear buds, other wireless devices are actually causing us harm in our daily lives.
During our culminating activity - students enriched their knowledge by building model rockets and reflecting on all of the applications with force and motion.
We then started Unit 2: Heat and Energy. At home, students should be discussing these concepts of energy and heat to enhance their understanding - adding the vocabulary terms learned in class to everyday activities like how energy gets into our homes and transforms into different types of energy, finding cooking supplies based on specific heat capacity, different ways that heat transfers, etc. Discussing their learning with friends and family and finding every day examples at home can really help solidify the concepts! When cooking, ask your student which material of pan/pot would be best for that cooking application? Each unit students are writing about these personal applications in their on their blog site.
Enrichments are underway! Students get to enjoy exploring a subject in addition to what they learn in their classes. Pictured here is our artistic expression where they have been experiencing therapy with kinetic sand, building figures with air dry clay, sewing, knitting, drawing, building with Legos, etc.
Middle school is about so much more than just school work! Students are involved in so many extra curricular activities that help enrich their lives and the school. We have many 8th graders that ran cross country, and cheerleaders for the South Hall football team this year! And pictured here are some of our 8th grade DVA students at practice and at our first academic team meet vs. East Hall (which we won!).
Hello DVA Family!
We will be participating in two fun local traditions this year - Gainesville's "Square"crow Contest and the Green Street Parade.
We need YOUR help to make it happen! We want to showcase YOUR creativity and talents in our entries. Choose your favorite holiday - or participate in both! Contact the sponsoring teacher for more information.
If you're wondering, "Do they still need help?" - Yes! We do!
The link to order a yearbook online is https://www.yearbookordercenter.com/index.cfm/job/15243 and the same link can be used to order an 8th grade ad. Also, our yearbook company has set our sales to close on February 27th which is a bit earlier than past years. Please encourage your students to order their yearbooks sooner than later so that they aren’t left without one!
Savannah field trips Fundraising opportunities are already underway! :-) Chicken biscuit sales are happening on Friday mornings, and here are 2 options to use as a calendar to share on social media or with friends to "sponsor" your child's trip:
