WE DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY!
We had a very successful open house this month on Monday October 6! Thank you to everyone who came and brought your family and friends! The entire month of October has included 12 field trips for elementary schools to come through and bring their 5th grade students. It has been a special time seeing the ES students get so much enjoyment and excitement out of coming - and to see our students present well and share all of their knowledge! I've taken A LOT of pictures, but here are just a few.
Math did not slow down in October. We continued looking at how to solve systems of equations, but without the help of a graph. The 2 methods we used to find where two different equations would share a similar coordinate point on a graph was through elimination and substituting. We didn't end there though. We applied our knowledge of how inequalities worked and how they looked on a graph in order to find a solution of 2 inequalities. Instead of looking for a specific coordinate point, we looked at where the 2 inequalities' shading would overlap and any point in that overshaded area would be considered a solution. The students finished this Unit with a CBA at the end of October and look forward to learning about rational and irrational numbers.
Our narrative unit has jumped off to a creepy start with the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe! In addition to reading "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Cask of Amontillado," and "The Raven," we have gotten creative and argumentative with these works. Students put the Narrator of "The Tell-Tale Heart" on trial, determining if he was guilty of murder or not guilty by reason of insanity. During our Unit Celebration, students experienced the rhythm and rhyme scheme of "The Raven" by rapping the Raven over hip hop beats. As we wrap up our Poe section of the unit, we'll be starting to prepare for our reading of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, so get ready for some "thees," "thous," and "forsooths" coming home with your students.
October has been a very exciting month for Georgia Studies. We hosted a dinner party where students were allowed to study and research different historical figures who participated in the American Revolution! They rehearsed questions and answers to create a dinner party filled with drama and laughs! We have been looking at the evolution of America from pre-colonial, to the colonies of the British, to their revolutionary roles, to the states that we know today.

We also had many opportunities for artistic expressions! The students were asked to create comic panels designed to depict the taxations of the British, and how the American colonists responded! The
There are always exciting things happening in HS Physical Science, and October was no exception! We started the month with energy transfer and types of energy and quickly transitioned into heat with a challenging, but exciting lab on heat transfer and specific heat capacity! Students got to use tongs to move metal cubes from boiling water into room temperature water to see how much it would heat up the water and then calculate the specific heat capacity of each of the metals. We also had a fun time with different heat explorations and discovering different aspects of heat transfer.
Then after Fall Break, students worked on their Egg Drop Challenge! At the end of the day, of the 19 eggs: 11 were intact, 2 cracked and 6 were splat! We saw a lot of creative ways to either slow down the egg (using knowledge of force and air resistance), absorb the impact of the fall (using knowledge of energy), or some contraptions used principles of both!
The last week in October, we have transitioned to Unit 3: Electricity. Students have had the first of two labs in this unit so far! Building a solenoid and electromagnet, and next week they will build a working series and parallel circuit. Students are enjoying the hands-on exploring of different aspects of electricity. At home, talk to your students about the electrical components in your home - show them the breaker box, the transformers in your neighborhood, a fuse in some Christmas lights. I think it would really help them to see some of the things we are talking about in class in their homes and discussing them with family and friends!

Students have been creating air dry clay creations in art enrichment!
Academic Team is now 3-1 for the season! Last 2 regular season meets are Nov 4 and 18, and PAGE Regional Tournament is Saturday Dec 6.
The link to order a yearbook online is https://www.yearbookordercenter.com/index.cfm/job/15243 and the same link can be used to order an 8th grade ad. Also, our yearbook company has set our sales to close on February 27th which is a bit earlier than past years. Please encourage your students to order their yearbooks sooner than later so that they aren’t left without one!
Savannah field trips Fundraising opportunities are already underway! :-) Chicken biscuit sales are happening on Friday mornings, and here are 2 options to use as a calendar to share on social media or with friends to "sponsor" your child's trip:

Nothing Bundt Cake fundraiser has officially started as well! See the links below for the flyer and order form. Each student going to Savannah is encouraged to sell as many vouchers as they can to support their individual costs of the trip. If you don't have a student going to Savannah and want to support the group as a whole, you can buy a voucher from Coach Greene and the profits will be split among everyone just like CFA biscuits!
This link will take you to all the details of the Hall County High School Programs of Choice. Please make a note of the dates and times of parent nights in the upcoming weeks. Applications are open now and will close on Dec 12.
