WE DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY!
On November 11 we honored our Veterans. Many DVA students and families participated - bringing in food, bringing a loved one to the celebration, singing in the chorus, playing in the band, participating in honor guard, etc.
November began with Unit 3: Radicals. A radical is a mathematical expression that includes a square root sign. This is the opposite operation of exponentiation. This means a radical is used to find a number that when multiplied by itself a certain number of times, equals the original number. For example, the square root of 25=5 because 5*5=25. With this information, we found how to simply radicals of non-perfect squares or cubes (i.e. the square root of 108). We continued the unit with adding and subtracting radicals with like and unlike radicands (the number underneath the square root) as well as how to multiply them. We finished Unit 3 mid November with a CBA test. The week before Thanksgiving Break, the students started Unit 4A: Quadratics, which will be the final unit for this semester. The students learned how to add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. We briefly looked at how to factor polynomials as well and that is where we will pick up in December.
We have turned our attention to Romeo and Juliet in the month of November! We began learning (and teaching) about the Elizabethan Era in an Informational Jigsaw Activity where students chose a different topic and taught their classmates about that particular aspect of the Elizabethan Era. Students have taken on the roles of our actors as we perform the play in class, with students making use of our pool noodle swords and wigs (and high fives when the stage directions call for kisses). Our writing has focused on narrative techniques, as we have discussed characterization, pacing, and sensory details to create engaging narratives that draw in the reader.
For Georgia Studies, we had the amazing privilege of visiting the Atlanta History Center in Atlanta. This was an incredible opportunity for our students to get an insight into life in Georgia during the Civil War, and build on what they had already learned from our lessons over the Antebellum South! Our students explored the importance of railroads in Atlanta, the impact of slave narratives, and even got to experiment with morse code using a telegraph! Last but not least, our students were able to experience the Cyclorama depicting the Battle of Atlanta.
November saw the conclusion of Unit 3: Electricity and the beginning of our last unit for the semester - Unit 4: Waves. Waves have so many applications so there are SO MANY things you can talk about with your students at home to help with their understanding of this current unit! Applications in the medical field include x-rays, radiation, infrared (basically most of the EM spectrum!). We are also talking about sound waves - so many applications there - music, Doppler Effect, traveling through air vs. water.
We will conclude this unit with "The Waves Around Us" Socratic Discussion - I would love for you to talk to them about that and find places to research and discuss the potential for negative effects (mental and/or physical) on the increase of radio/microwaves around us with the increase of communication devices.
Pictured above is the circuits lab - everyone really enjoyed this lab and seemed to really understand series and parallel circuits! They also learned how to draw electrical schematic drawings using symbols. Below are pictures of some students testing out making batteries with fruit and some where able to get the voltmeter to read some voltage!
We held our second unit celebration on October 31st. Our theme for this unit is "Resistance and Transformation". In science, students transformed a lot of energy - including static electricity with the Van Der Graff! We culminated the event with transforming ice cream into ice cream sundaes. :-)
This link will take you to all the details of the Hall County High School Programs of Choice. Please make a note of the dates and times of parent nights in the upcoming weeks. Applications are open now and will close on Dec 12.
This month, students visited STEAM at Flower Branch HS and JISA at Johnson HS earlier in the month. JISA then came and did a presentation at our school later that same week. We have students applying to JISA at JHS, STEAM at FBHS, Legacy at CBMS, RACE at Chestatee, EpiCC at EHHS, etc. It is very exciting to see our DVA students spread their wings and launch into high school all over the county!
We also visited the Atlanta History Center on Wednesday November 19 and the tour was entitled "The Price of Freedom." Students learned about the Civil War through studying primary sources, a simulation about transportation around the Texas train engine, and viewing a production of a slave owner. We culminated the trip with viewing the cyclorama depicting the Battle of Atlanta!
Academic Team finished their regular season in November and ended with a record of 3-3. We will be headed to the PAGE Regional tournament this Saturday Dec 6.
Basketball season has now begun in Nov! We have A LOT of DVA players represented on both the boys and girls A and B teams. See below for a full schedules to come support all 4 of our teams!
The link to order a yearbook online is https://www.yearbookordercenter.com/index.cfm/job/15243 and the same link can be used to order an 8th grade ad. Also, our yearbook company has set our sales to close on February 27th which is a bit earlier than past years. Please encourage your students to order their yearbooks sooner than later so that they aren’t left without one!
Fundraisers are continuing. Thank you to everyone who is contributing to the CFA biscuit sales and the Nothing Bundt Cake Sales! Your next Payment for the Field trip is due: January 6th.
