WE DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY!
In math we finished up Unit 5 - Exponential Equations. Students got a chance to see how fast a population can grow with their M&M Project. Or in Mr. Ray's eyes, how quickly one class can go through a few bags of them! After the CBA for this unit, we jumped into our Statistics Unit. We have focused on the a few characteristics of data sets like mean, median, range, as well as looked at how this data could be shown on a few different types of graphs: dot plot, historgram, or box and whiskers plot. We will finish this Unit up fairly quickly and then move on to our final unit of the year, Probability.
In the month of March, we have finished up Unit Three and started our final unit of the year. Students wrapped up their study of To Kill a Mockingbird with a Tracking Poster assignment, exploring themes, symbols, and motifs that Harper Lee developed throughout the novel. Our final unit of the year will focus on poetic techniques for writing and dystopian literature as we read Fahrenheit 451. Students have written dystopian parodies of children's stories, modeled after Kij Johnson's short story "Ponies," and we are now exploring a variety of poetic techniques.
The month of March has been jam packed for our GA Studies students! We've been exploring the impacts of the Civil Rights movement, and how it changed life for millions of people, not just in Georgia, but in the entire country! We then moved into the study of Modern Georgia, and the impacts of influential figures like Maynard Jackson and Jimmy Carter. Students have been analyzing the impact and changes made to Georgia's economic revenue, where once we were a state focused on agriculture, we now make our money from trading and the film industry!
Ask your students what they're favorite show filmed in Georgia is, and I bet they could give you an answer!
We also had the incredible opportunity of going to visit either Savannah or the Northeast Georgia History Center! Both trips taught our students (and teachers) so many new and incredible facts about our incredible state!
In March we covered my favorite unit of the entire course (don't tell the other units!) - Bonding and Chemical Reactions (Unit #7)! I love learning how new substances are formed, and I love the number puzzle part of figuring out how elements come together, and then how they break apart! I hope the students enjoyed it as much as I did - and see how amazing it is to see these elements come together and break apart to form all the substance around us!
In this unit, we did a lot of hands on activities and manipulatives. As we have been balancing charges in bonding and then balancing chemical equations, we have utilized the white board and drawn models. We also got back out the unit cubes from when we used them to form model atoms with the Bohr model. This time instead of protons, neutrons and electrons, the unit cubes represented different elements and were used to balance chemical equations.
Students have been learning more about the chemicals in their everyday items such as food, cleaning products, etc. They worked on a household sort with some of these common chemical compounds in class, and then had an activity where they found their own at home! It's a great way for them to relate what we are doing in class to their own experiences in their lives.
Students performed a lab where they had to PROVE the Law of Conversation of Matter (LOCOM) using the chemical reaction between Alka Seltzer and water. This lab was different than any other because students had to write their own procedures! So each experiment was different - some used a baggie, others a flask or graduated cylinder and balloon.
We are now talking about solutions and acid/bases. How you can help at home is to talk to students about how to improve rate of solution/solubility in solutions they make at home (like sweet tea, lemonade, Kool-aid) and which household items are acids and which are bases. Our final exam is coming up at the end of April - Monday April 27. So it is important they are reviewing material from the WHOLE year (Aug-April) - both physics and chemistry to do well on that final exam (20% of their grade in the course) and the End-of-Year Milestones.
See some pictures of Engineering Enrichment where students have been working on catapults and now Ziplines!
Savannah Field Trip has it's own page!
Pictures from a local field trip that week to the Northeast Georgia History Center.
On March 12, 25 students had an unique opportunity to go to UNG's Gainesville's campus and hear from a lot of differnet professionals in our community about their career choices!

DVA Field Day Tuesday May 19 in the morning - Cherokee Bluffs Park. Link to sign up to volunteer.
Some parents, teachers and students all got together on 3/14 and transformed our courtyard into a much more usable and beautiful space!
What do your Friday mornings look like? Ours look like students enjoying some Dance-Dance-Revolution moves before the news starts!
No balls in the courtyard to prevent people getting hurt, windows getting hit, and just general be able to eat in peace. So some clever students came up with "paper baseball" Even our director Ms. Ewing jumped in!
