Below is a sample of how Kathy Hollimon has included function-based recommendations in a BIP.
Based on function of behavior, staff will utilize the following:
Escape - Demands may be reduced or chunked but will not be totally removed in response to aggressive or escalated behaviors. Staff will maintain expectations and follow through. When high levels of escape behaviors are demonstrated, staff will offer mastered level and preferred tasks to start a momentum of positive behavior. If he needs to leave the classroom due to high levels of disruption, the work he was attempting to avoid will go with him for completion in an alternate environment.
Access - desired items/activities will be utilized as part of a structured reinforcement system. They will be withheld when he engages in aggressive behaviors. If he is permitted to use the item he will be prompted to request it appropriately once the aggression has ceased. Staff may require him to complete a quick simple instruction prior to accessing the item to ensure the access is not coupled with the aggression. He will not be offered preferred items to stop target behaviors but only for performance of positive replacement behaviors and direction following.
Attention - Staff will refrain from providing direct instruction to problematic behaviors and will avoid talking about the behavior but rather redirect him to a more desirable behavior. Eye contact will be minimized. Peers will be guided to remove attention.
Sensory – Staff will utilized identified sensory strategies in collaboration with occupational therapist. This can include but is not limited to movement breaks, visual supports, sensory tools, noise cancelling headphones.
