Lipids
(Sara Kamstra)
4 Types of Lipids
What are Lipids
What are Lipids
- Mostly C and H atoms (non- polar)
- Repels water (hydrophobic)
- Insoluble in water
- Very small partial change
- London forces are in a lipid, weakest inter molecular forces

- Fats
- Phospholipids
- Steroids
- Waxes
Triglycerides
Triglycerides
- Most common type of lipid
- Formed when the three hydroxide (OH-) groups of a single glycerol molecule react with the carboxylic group (COOH-) of three fatty acids by forming ester bonds
- Common lengths are 16,18,20
- Offer energy to cells
Saturated and Unsaturated Fats
Saturated and Unsaturated Fats
- Saturated fats
- Full of Hydrogen molecules
- Less reactive
- Straight, solid chains
- In animals
- Not good for you
- Unsaturated fats
- Full of C=C bonds
- More reactive
- easier to breaks down
- They have more space and can bend
- Bendable
- In plants
- Good for you
