Healthcare plays a vital role as one of the San Diego region's largest and most in-demand employment groups, but the sector has struggled to maintain a consistent talent pipeline; this is especially true in East County. The GUHSD Health Pathways work to address the healthcare workforce shortage in East San Diego County by jumpstarting students' education and training while in high school. This is accomplished through career-oriented classroom lessons and activities, with a focus on health and medical content in science classes. Health Pathway students also have opportunities to engage with the healthcare sector and health-related college and career readiness programs. These opportunities include asynchronous career exploration in after-school or off-campus settings, as well as engagement through guest speakers, field trips and volunteer opportunities. The capstone opportunity for Health Pathway students is to invest their time, energy and passion to one of four summer internship and certification programs.
